making the case for artists

When Artists and Cities began in 1994, there was no database of individual artists living and working in the Pittsburgh area. The impact — economic, social, educational, cultural — of a segment of our community that is thousands strong was generally dismissed as minor. To counteract that, Artists and Cities built a database and conducted a survey of the area’s artists. It changed a lot of minds and has resulted in increased visibility for artists’ impact and for the housing and workspace needs of artists. The data has helped us “make the case” for real estate development for artists and for new artist programs.
